I think you would have to really like your neighbors to live with your houses as close together as the ones in the photo. Granted these are the garages so maybe they have lots of space in the other direction. I have seen condos and townhouses where they are actually this close though. When we moved last summer, we moved into a real no kidding subdivision. It is the first time I have lived in one, having lived most of my life on property with acreage. I love my current house and neighborhood and thankfully our houses are nowhere near this close. It’s quiet and everyone is friendly. My husband and I are able to safely take walks and ride bikes. There is mostly farmland all around in every direction outside of the subdivision so there is always a lot of nature around. Definitely no “keeping up with the Joneses” going on around here from what I can tell!

Being the Google nut that I am, I had to research the history of that phrase. I mean I knew what it meant….an idiom in many parts of the English-speaking world referring to the comparison to one’s neighbor as a benchmark for social class or the accumulation of material goods…(thank you Google), but I was curious to know the history behind it. It turns out is was a newspaper comic strip created back in 1913 and it ran until 1940! It was about the social climbing McGinis family, who struggled to “keep up” with their neighbors, the Joneses of the title. Interestingly, the Joneses were never actually shown in the comic…just talked about. So there you have it…check comic strip history lesson off your list for today!
