I love this quote. It reminds me of my mother and my mother’s house. She has been a collector of antiques since before I was born. I grew up stopping at every garage sale we passed and on the weekends, following a whole list made from ads pulled from the classified section of the local newspaper. I was taught very early how to spot Roseville, McCoy, Weller, Depression Glass, Carnival Glass and so much more. Church sales were the best and I always came home with some new toy and some new clothes or shoes to play dress up in.
I didn’t really appreciate antiques when I was in my teens and early 20’s. It wasn’t until I started collecting things of my own that I paused to give thought about the previous owner and the item and now that I am even older (mid 50’s) I think about it even more.
My mother is in her mid 80’s and has a house, basement, attic and barn filled with treasures. I know there will come a day when my siblings and I will face the sad task of going through those treasures, keeping our personal favorites and then what? I know we can’t keep everything but how do you let ANY of it go?
This is why I now appreciate my vintage treasures even more. Surely my vintage children’s books were once held lovingly by a small child or by a loving parent reading bedtime stories to their little ones. This is why I, now, also smile when I read them and hold them lovingly. They do indeed have personality, character and soul.
