Little House In The Big Woods

I’m sure I am aging myself with this title but it really is a little house in a big wood. For those who may not know, the title of this post is also the title of the first book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder of Little House on the Prairie fame. The book was published in 1932 and in it Laura describes the homesteading skills she observed and began to practice when she was 5 years old.

I loved the TV series and the pilot episode has always been one that stood out. The pilot episode aired in March 1974, which means I was 8 years old. My older sister had the set of Little House books and had sometimes read aloud to me so as an 8 year old I was excited about seeing the characters come alive on TV.

The thing I have always remembered the most from that pilot episode was Mr. Edwards, making his way through a snow storm in his long johns to the Ingalls cabin to deliver gifts he claimed were from a run in with Santa himself. My how simple times were then and how things have changed today. He brought the girls each a little tin cup and a peppermint stick and in their stockings they each received a shiny new penny and a cookie shaped like a heart and Laura described the Christmas as “grand”!

I have wonderful childhood memories of Christmas and did my best to create Christmas magic for my own daughter when she was little (and even still). She is 28 now and often talks about her holiday memories fondly and it makes my heart feel full knowing I gave her some wonderful memories that she will never forget as I will never forget mine. When she eventually has children, I know she will create great new memories with her little ones….and so life goes on as it has for generations.
